These ceremonies included cakes topped with candles—one for each year of the child's life, plus one for good luck. This lovely practice subsequently spread to the United States.
Birthday cake traditions in the United States evolved over time. The song "Happy Birthday to You" became a staple of birthday parties, and blowing out the candles while making a wish became a treasured tradition.
